April is Volunteer Month!

April is a time of renewal—longer days, fresh energy, and a chance to reconnect with what matters most. It’s also the perfect moment to give back. That’s why April is recognized as Volunteer Month: a call to action for individuals, businesses, and organizations to step up and support their communities in meaningful ways.

In a place like North Adams and across Berkshire County, volunteering isn’t just a nice idea—it’s essential. Nonprofits, schools, food programs, and community initiatives rely on volunteers to keep things running and to expand what’s possible. Whether it’s mentoring a young person, helping distribute food, supporting local events, or lending professional skills, every hour makes a difference.

Getting involved is easier than you might think! There are several local organizations ready to connect you with opportunities that match your interests, schedule, and skills:

  • The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities, from family support programs to community events and outreach efforts. It’s a great starting point if you want to plug into grassroots work that directly impacts local residents.

  • RSVP of the Berkshires (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) connects adults 55 and older with meaningful service opportunities across the region. Whether you’re looking to stay active, share your expertise, or meet new people, RSVP provides structure and support.

  • Northern Berkshire United Way partners with local nonprofits to address critical needs, from education to financial stability. Volunteering through United Way can connect you to high-impact initiatives and collaborative efforts across the Northern Berkshires.

Volunteer Month is also a great opportunity for businesses to get involved. Organizing a team volunteer day, offering paid volunteer hours, or partnering with a local nonprofit can strengthen workplace culture while making a visible impact in the community.

If you’ve been thinking about volunteering but haven’t taken the first step, consider this your invitation. Start small, try something new, and bring a friend! The most important thing is to show up.

When more people get involved, the entire community becomes stronger, more connected, and more resilient.
