ICYMI: MSBDC at BIC Works
MSBDC’s Rob DelMastro talks to small business owners
On Tuesday, May 5, nearly 20 small business owners and entrepreneurs gathered at BIC Works @ MASS MoCA for a drop-in business resource event co-sponsored by the North Adams Partnership and the Williamstown Chamber of Commerce.
Held from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the event offered a flexible, open-door format that allowed attendees to stop by on their own schedule. Throughout the morning, business owners met one-on-one with experienced advisors, connected with local entrepreneurial organizations, and explored resources tailored to businesses at various stages of growth.
A recurring informational session ensured that attendees received practical guidance regardless of when they arrived.
Rob DelMastro, Regional Director of the Western Region, addressed common challenges facing small business owners, including what he described as "owner stalemate" — a pattern in which business owners become so occupied with day-to-day operations that strategic planning is set aside. He encouraged attendees to dedicate time to working on their business, not just in it.
DelMastro also highlighted the importance of long-term planning, particularly around exit strategies. Without a defined plan, he noted, many business owners “simply turn off the lights and go home,” without preserving or transferring the value they have built. He additionally acknowledged the personal dimension of entrepreneurship, noting that isolation is a common experience among business owners and that access to trusted advisors and peer networks plays an important role in long-term success.
The event drew positive engagement from participants, with attendees exchanging experiences and building connections across the morning.
